Lions Club donates $10,000 to Cancer Care Unit Redevelopment

Fundraising efforts for the Cancer Care Unit at Tamworth Hospital will receive a boost tomorrow, with the presentation of a generous cheque from the South Tamworth Lions Club.

The President of the South Tamworth Lions Club, John White will present the $10,000 cheque to the Oncology Unit’s Nurse Unit Manager Peter Freeman.

According to Mr Freeman the generosity of the community during the fundraising campaign has been overwhelming.

“We are very grateful to people within the community who are so generously donating their time and money towards the redevelopment of the Cancer Care Unit,” Mr Freeman said.

“Although we have still got a long way to go, the support of community groups such as the South Tamworth Lions Club, has been crucial to the success of the campaign so far.”

President of the South Tamworth Lions Club John White said the $10,000 raised came from the proceeds of the club’s charity golf day held in June and the opening night of Shrek 3.

“We had more than 80 participants in the annual charity golf day this year and 24 sponsors who made the event lots of fun as well as a fundraising success,” Mr White said.

“Many of us within the South Tamworth Lions Club have been affected in some way by cancer so we are certainly very eager to support this ongoing campaign for the redevelopment of the Cancer Care Unit.”

The refurbishment and extension of the Cancer Care Unit would provide a purpose built facility and include:

• An increase in chemotherapy chairs in the suite from six to nine;

• A private treatment room for complex procedures

• Additional space for patient support and multidisciplinary staff

The cheque presentation will be made at the Tamworth Hospital Oncology Unit 10am tomorrow, Friday 6 July 2007. Media are welcome to attend.
