Workers Club contributes to local health service

A generous donation from the Toronto Workers Club is set to make life more comfortable for rehabilitation patients at Westlakes Community Health Centre.
The Westlakes Community Health Centre’s Rehabilitation Unit received a large Tilt Table to assist patients during rehabilitation for multiple sclerosis, stroke and a range of other conditions, as part of the Worker Club’s Community Development program.
Those clients who make frequent, and often painful visits to the Westlakes Community Health Centre to receive treatment will feel the benefit of the equipment, as the equipment will be loaned out to clients so they can be treated in their own homes.
Tilt Table therapy is used for patients who spend prolonged periods lying down, lifting patients from a flat to upright position in order to regulate blood flow and body weight distribution.
The Tilt Table will now be part of a comprehensive service through which Health Service clients can loan the bed free of charge and have it delivered to their home where physiotherapists will instruct them and their carers on how to administer Tilt Table therapy.
Team Leader of Westlakes Community Health Centre’s Rehabilitation Unit Jan Bartlett said the donation is extremely useful and complements existing rehabilitation services.
“We approached the Workers Club about the new equipment and the service it could provide and thankfully they were forthcoming with the funding, they have been extremely helpful throughout the process,” Ms Bartlett said.
“For many clients it will be a comfort to have this service come to their front door and it will remove impediments that arise when they have to make frequent trips into the Health Centre.
“At a value of around $3700 this is a substantial donation. We are very grateful for their generosity and over time the community who benefit from this equipment will come to appreciate that generosity as well.”
Toronto Workers Club Business Development Manager Lindsay Young said the geographical closeness of the Health Centre and the vital contribution it makes to the community made it the perfect candidate for their Community Development program.
“We are situated right across the street from the Health Service, so we understand what it means to our community,” Mr Young said.
“We are delighted that we have had an opportunity to contribute to services at the Health Centre; it is for valuable services like this that we developed our Community Development program, which we are now well known for.”
