Jazz concert for international disability day
3 December 2007
The Barraba community are being encouraged to Jazz-up their day for the disabled on Tuesday 3 December, at the Barraba Health Service’s Jazzability Day.
To help raise funds and awareness for the International Day of Disabled Persons the Day Centre at Barraba Hospital will host a jazz concert for anyone interested in jazz music or factors influencing the life of disabled persons.
Local jazz band Old Spice will grace the stage from 11am, followed by a barbeque lunch for all attendance.
Day Centre Acting Coordinator Wendy Taylor said the event is an attempt to raise the profile of issues facing disabled people, but also an excuse to get out of the office and have a bit of fun for a good cause.
“There is no doubt we need to raise the awareness of things affecting the lives of disabled people every day. There is a lot that can be done to improve the quality of life of disabled persons,” Ms Taylor said.
“There is no reason why we can’t have a good time doing this; the Jazzability idea was our way of using the International Day of Disabled Persons to get the local community to take note of issues facing people living with a disability.”
All members of the community are welcome to attend the Jazzability Day at a cost of just seven dollars per head, which includes lunch after the concert.
Barraba Health Service Manager Cathy Stein echoed this message, saying it was up to the community to help raise awareness of disability issues and create a future for those in rural areas living with disabilities.
“It can be a tough life for anyone living with a disability, let alone those living in rural areas where services and facilities can be difficult to access,” Ms Stein said.
“This only reinforces our need to promote the issue and put disabled persons on the agenda.”
Media are welcome to attend the Jazzability Day on 3 December from 11am in the Day Centre at Gunnedah Hospital, photograph and interview opportunities will available.
