Mums encouraged to breastfeed their babies
Mums encouraged to breastfeed their babies
24 August 2007
August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and Armidale Aboriginal Mothers and Babies Service staff want the community to know that they are on hand to support mums to give their babies the best possible start in life.
One of the midwives with the Mothers and Babies Service, Pamela Paltridge, said part of their role in supporting pregnant mothers is to discuss breastfeeding options.
"Breastfeeding isn’t for everyone, but it really is the best possible start for babies, and we try to encourage and support mothers to breastfeed wherever possible," Pamela said.
"Even if you choose to breastfeed for a short time, your baby can get that first milk which contains lots of nutrients and infection fighting properties that are so important."
Pamela said there are lots of reasons why breastfeeding is a good idea.
"Breast milk is the most natural way to give your baby what it needs. It’s made by your body for your baby.
"It is made when it is needed, it is never too hot or too cold and is always available, and is fresh, clean and safe.
"Breast milk has all the goodness a baby requires to grow and develop and it contains special protection to help fight germs, diseases and allergies.
"It’s certainly convenient and the price is much better than formula," she said.
