The mater site redevelopment is a $212 million investment co-locating Calvary Mater Newcastle and Hunter New England Mental Health within the one site. The provision of quality health care for Hunter residents via a Public Private Partnership with the Novacare Consortium. This project will bring much needed mental health and radiotherapy services to this region, as well as a redeveloped Calvary Mater Newcastle.
This is the final stage of the Newcastle Strategy, the largest capital works program to upgrade health facilities in the Hunter.
Hunter residents will gain a range of new and expanded high quality health services when the redevelopment is completed by 2009.
The redevelopment includes:
- Redevelopment of the Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital, which will have a total bed capacity of 204 beds, a new and larger emergency department, intensive care unit and coronary care unit
- Construction of a new 100-bed acute mental health facility on the mater site (including 14 additional acute mental health beds) to replace existing facilities at James Fletcher Hospital
- Expansion of cancer radiation therapy facilities at the Calvary Mater Newcastle, including the provision of extra equipment and refurbishment of existing facilities. Once completed, the Calvary Mater Newcastle will become the largest provider of radiation oncology services in NSW.
Time Frame
- New Radiation Oncology facilities to be completed by April 2007
- Stage 1 (Clinical services building) to be completed by January 2008
- Stage 2 (North Block) to be completed by January 2009
- Stage 3 (Mental Health Unit) to be completed by July 2009
