The $31.5 million redevelopment of Belmont Hospital has been undertaken in three stages and is part of the $360 million Newcastle Strategy - the largest ever investment in the region's health services.

Stage one of the redevelopment was completed in 2003 and included a new Emergency Department.

Stage two of the redevelopment was completed in February 2006 and included:

  • New perioperative suite (including a new operating room, recovery and patient arrival areas)
  • Two new ultrasound rooms
  • New X-ray room with new X-ray machine
  • New reception and reporting rooms
  • New Clinical Information Department

Stage three of the redevelopment was officially opened in May 2007 and included: 

  • Refurbishment of an existing ward into a 20-bed transitional care unit, allowing the transfer of the transitional care unit from the Royal Newcastle Hospital to the Belmont Hospital in October 2006. The transitional care unit provides care for people waiting for palcement in an aged care facility.
  • A new ward block with 62 beds for medical, rehabilitiation, high dependency, coronary care and surgical patients
  • A new pathology laboratory and pathology collection room
  • Refurbishment and expansion of the Hospital's pharmacy area
  • New kiosk for the Belmont Blue Ladies Volunteers and Pink Ladies shop
  • New ground-level car park for 88 cars
