Emergency Information

In the event of an emergency please dial 000 (Triple Zero) for Police, Fire or Ambulance.

The John Hunter Hospital Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including public holidays).

The role of the Emergency Department is to care for all emergencies. An emergency is when an illness or injury is serious and requires urgent attention.

The order in which you will be seen in an emergency department is determined by the seriousness of your health problem, not the time of your arrival. Those people with the most serious and urgent conditions will always be seen first, and those with less serious conditions may have to wait until a doctor is free.

You can help our Emergency Department staff by using alternative services for minor illnesses or injuries. Alternate options include:

  • General Practitioner - Make an appointment to see your local / family general practitioner (GP).
  • Healthdirect - Call 1800 022 222 anytime (24 hours, 7 days a week) for free health information and advice.
  • Pharmacist - Your local Pharmacist can also advise on many non-serious conditions.
