Psychiatry Training Program

The local Psychiatry Training Program is called HNET - Hunter New England (Psychiatry) Training.  We are an Area Health Service wide network and the only one of five other networks in the State to be based outside of Sydney.

HNET has a proud tradition of producing high quality local graduates in Psychiatry.  Our pass rates for exams over recent years have been as high as anywhere else in Australia and New Zealand. Most trainees will commence their training in either Newcastle or Maitland and rotate through a variety of experiences in Inpatient, Community, Consultation-Liaison, Child and Adolescent, Old Age, Neuropsychiatry, Psychotherapy, Forensics and much more.

All subspecialties can be provided locally, which is a major advantage of HNET – you can undertake a broad range of experiences whilst continuing with one program and one employer. At some point during your training you will be required to undertake a rural term in either Tamworth or Taree.  Free good quality accommodation, a grade higher of pay and support to continue your training are provided during this experience. There is also a rural scholarship available for those undertaking a rural rotation of 6 months or more. Registrars participate in an after hours roster, which is the envy of most other psychiatry programs, with average rates of after hours on-duty being one in seven.

Our Registrar Training program runs every Wednesday afternoon from 2.45pm to 5.00pm and is videolinked throughout Hunter New England, statewide, nationally, and sometimes even internationally.

Rural Scholarships

The HETI Rural Scholarship Fund (RSF) supports medical trainees committed to training and providing patent care in rural locations in NSW through the continuum of their training and education years. Additional information about the RSF is available on the HETI website. HNET also provide trainees doing rural rotations with accommodation, a grade higher in pay and a free flight home to visit family during the term if necessary.

Non-Government Organisations

Registrars may wish to contact the Richmond Fellowship in order to complete their annual NGO experience. This organisation is particularly supportive of this experience and would like to invite registrars to attend, preferably in groups of three or four. Richmond Fellowship can be contacted by e-mailing Caroline Hole (District Manager):  c.hole@rfnsw.org.au

Examination Preparation

HNET provide a 5-week examination preparation program for those preparing to undertake the RANZCP writtens. This program runs twice yearly and includes a mock written examination held under the same conditions as the actual exam. A helpful website for exam preparataion is www.mcc.ca

There are some  videos you can watch in preparation for examinations at this site: http://library.med.utah.edu/neurologicexam/html/introduction.html  (These video files are large and may take some time to download and watch, so if you would like to access them instantly from disc, there is a disc available at the Mater library for borrowing).

Dr Neil Port has written fantastic guides for preparing for clinical examinations:

Mid-rotation and End-rotation completion forms

Among other forms that trainees must complete, both a mid-rotation evaluation form and an end-rotation completion form for each rotation undertaken must be completed with their supervisors. When you have completed your form, send it to Philippa Ditton-Phare in HNET. The Director of Training will sign off your forms and they will be logged with the unit and sent to the RANZCP for you.

Mid-rotation forms should be submitted to HNET by 30th April in Semester 1, and by 31st October in Semester 2.

End-rotation forms should be submitted to HNET by 31st July for Semester 1, and by 31st January for Semester 2.

Please note, if your form is submitted more than three months late, the College may not endorse your rotation.
