Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds occur on Wednesday afternoons at 1.30pm in the MHA Building, Mater Hospital and is preceded by a lunch at 1pm. It is an open forum with all employees of Hunter New England Mental Health and participants from other Area Health Services invited. Grand Rounds are an important educational opportunity for all staff and has a long tradition of being popular with medical students, allied health staff, junior and senior medical staff, psychologists and other interested clinicians. Recently, the structure has been modified to create the opportunity for an increased academic focus, thereby enhancing the continued professional development value of each session. Grand Rounds are usually presented by members of the multidisciplinary team from each subspeciality and location throughout our network. High levels of audience participation are encouraged.

WHO CAN ATTEND?  All mental health clinicians.

SRMO Training

We now have a brand new SRMO program, designed for SRMOs in the service, as well as potentially any HNAPP members who have already been through our JMO program once. This will comprise six sessions (twice annually), three of which will give people a chance to present and discuss a case. Alternating with these will be three sessions on some of the essential topics in hands-on psychiatry - Suicidality, Medication Adherence, and Counter-transference. Dr Marina Vamos will be hoping for plenty of feedback - both formally and informally - since this is an experimental venture for all of us.

WHO CAN ATTEND?  SRMOs and HNAPPers who have already completed the JMO Training Program.

Examination Preparation

HNET provide a 5-week examination preparation program for those preparing to undertake the RANZCP writtens. This program runs twice yearly and includes a mock written examination held under the same conditions as the actual exam. A helpful website for exam preparataion is www.mcc.ca

There are some  videos you can watch in preparation for examinations at this site: http://library.med.utah.edu/neurologicexam/html/introduction.html  (These video files are large and may take some time to download and watch, so if you would like to access them instantly from disc, there is a disc available at the Mater library for borrowing).

Dr Neil Port has written fantastic guides for preparing for clinical examinations:
