Aim

To rehearse the management of complications of sedation in paediatric practice

Outline

Simulation is an educational experience, and an adjunct to traditional methods of training, that allows participants to rehearse the management of adverse events in a safe but realistic environment. Simulation can reliably and efficiently provide exposure to multiple adverse events ensuring that providers of sedation have an opportunity to manage crises that they may not otherwise encounter in clinical practice.

Content

  • Refresh basic airway & resuscitation skills
  • Familiarisation with equipment and monitoring used in sedation
  • Rescue from a level of sedation deeper than that intended
  • Foster an appreciation for non-technical skills such as communication and teamwork
  • Basic knowledge of IV sedation agents is assumed and not explicitly covered.

Prerequisites

This is a course is for clinicians who are currently providing intravenous sedation for paediatric patients. Areas that clinicians may be working in include radiology, nuclear medicine, emergency department and interventional suites.
