Aim

To teach a multidisciplinary team the theory and practical skills, both technical and teamwork skills, to manage a cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular crises

Outline

The course includes readings sent prior to the course, lectures, skills stations and simulation scenarios, including:

  • use of a manual and or SAED (Shock Advisory External Defibrillator),
  • transcutaneous pacing,
  • the role of drugs in cardiac arrest,
  • effective bag-mask ventilation, and
  • insertion of a Laryngeal Mask Airway

Content

Course content is based on recommendations from the Australian Resuscitation Council and on crisis resource management (CRM) principles including effective leadership, communication, distribution of workload, and assertiveness.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with basic life support

Assessment

Nursing staff – if you wish to be signed off in My Health Learning for ALS competency you must provide evidence of having completed Edmore online ALS theory and assessment no longer than 3 months prior to the course date.  Please bring this to our attention at the time of booking as additional time will need to be allowed for the practical assessment.

Medical staff – if you need to be assessed to meet College requirements, please bring this to our attention at the time of registration as additional time will need to be allowed during the course.
