Launch of the "Living with Mosquitoes" Strategy
The 'Living with Mosquitoes Strategy' was officially launched in December 2006 by the Honourable Minister Costa, Minister of the Hunter. During the launch he stressed that mosquitoes are not only nuisance biting pests but also have the potential to spread debilitating illnesses such as Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus. As the region was expecting significant population growth over the next 20 years, the direct physical cost of these infections to individuals and indirect costs related to loss of work and social time would place pressure on families and needed to be minimised.
He praised the “Living with Mosquitoes Strategy” as the first of its kind in NSW that provided a solid basis for mosquito management with a strong focus on education, supported by sound information. Local communities would benefit from education on personal protection strategies and Councils and schools were encouraged to play a big part in the implementation of these programs.'
