Immunisation
Immunisation for Prevention and Protection
Immunisation is one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health measures for the control of vaccine preventable diseases.
Hunter New England Population Health (HNEPH) oversees immunisation programs for all age groups provided in general practice, public clinics hospitals, aged care facilities and schools. An important strategy for HNEPH is ensuring that children 0-7 years are fully immunised. However, immunisation is important for all Australians regardless of age.
The Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR) was implemented in 1996 and contains all vaccination details for children aged 0-7 years. The Commonwealth target for immunisation coverage rates for this age group is 95%. Current coverage rate for Hunter/New England children is 93.9% (Sep 2007), which is well above the state average (90.7%).
