Aboriginal Trainee Environmental Health Program (ATEHO)
Hunter New England Area Health Service supports the NSW Health Aboriginal Trainee Environmental Health Officer (ATEHO) Program. The area health service is focused on equity and public health integration in a participatory and community development framework to address both communicable and chronic diseases based on the social determinants of health. Employment is a major factor in addressing social determinants of health and Hunter New England Area Health Service is committed to ensuring this exists internally.
As part of the program trainees are employed on a full-time basis in Population Health Units and supported through their study for a Bachelor of Natural Science (Environment and Health) through the University of Western Sydney.
Hunter New England Area health service is in a fortunate position to be able to provide the necessary support to Aboriginal Environmental Health trainees to ensure they are well qualified, competent and confident for long term employment in environmental and public health.
The team is proud to have a graduate of the NSW Health ATEHO program as a Senior Environmental Health Officer. Beyond Environmental Health, the area employs a range of academically and professionally skilled people that also support and guide the trainees in their professional development.
