Aboriginal Trainee Environmental Health Program (ATEHO)

Hunter New England Area Health Service supports the NSW Health Aboriginal Trainee Environmental Health Officer (ATEHO) Program. The area health service is focused on equity and public health integration in a participatory and community development framework to address both communicable and chronic diseases based on the social determinants of health. Employment is a major factor in addressing social determinants of health and Hunter New England Area Health Service is committed to ensuring this exists internally.

As part of the program trainees are employed on a full-time basis in Population Health Units and supported through their study for a Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) through the University of Western Sydney.

Hunter New England Area health service is in a fortunate position to be able to provide the necessary support to Aboriginal Environmental Health trainees to ensure they are well qualified, competent and confident for long term employment in environmental and public health.

The team is proud to have a graduate of the NSW Health ATEHO program as a Senior Environmental Health Officer. Beyond Environmental Health, the area employs a range of academically and professionally skilled people that also support and guide the trainees in their professional development.

Nicole

"I commenced my training in June 2005 and during my employment as an Aboriginal Trainee Environmental Health Officer with the Hunter New England Area Health Service, I have witnessed an Environmental Health team that have been supportive and helpful to my studies and training in my pursuits to be a qualified Environmental Health Officer. My experiences have been very positive and I enjoy working and being part of a team that have a proactive approach to public health concerns. I have been involved in many aspects of Environmental Health including investigating infectious diseases such as cryptosporidium, psittacosis and elevated blood lead levels and a mercury incident. I have also been involved in the Housing for Health program at Cabarita and Tamworth, and I am responsible for the Legionella Sampling program and assist with implementing the Smoke Free Environment Act legislation.’"
