Maintaining Authority to Immunise

  • It is your responsibility to keep your practice current. For your General Nursing Registration you are required to have at least 20 hours of documented learning. Some of these hours can include immunisation education.
  • To maintain your authority to immunise, ‘the registered nurse/midwife annually reviews best practice policy for immunisation. This may be, but is not limited to, attendance at seminars on current practices. An annual statement of proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation must also be obtained’ (from Authority for Registered Nurses)

Overview

This comprehensive immunisation education update is tailored to all immunisation nurse working in the Hunter New England area and specially targeted for nurses who have not remained current with their authority to immunise. It will be live-streamed to observe the recommended social distancing and keep our important workforce safe. The event will be presented by Hunter New England Health Unit and will provide important information regarding new cold chain management requirements,  influenza disease and vaccines, COVID-19 update, adverse event following immunisation reporting, the current National Immunisation Program, anaphylaxis recognition & management and what changes are happening in this year’s school immunisation program

At the completion of this event participants will:

  • Be considered current for their education practice as an authorised nurse immuniser (once annual CPR is completed)
  • Have an understanding of the requirements of the 2020 national influenza vaccination program including recommendations, vaccines available, contra indicators and where to get resources
  • Recognise the importance of recognition and reporting of Adverse Event Following Immunisation
  • Have an understanding of the new NSW Vaccine cold chain management requirements
  • Have an overview of the National Immunisation Program
  • Understand the current NSW School program
  • Updated on COVID-19
  • Have an understanding of anaphylaxis recognition & management
  • Overview of global immunisation issues
  • Overview of enhanced cleaning practices
  • Importance of immunisation for Aboriginal people and their communities
