What changes are happening at HNE Health

Recruitment of Executive Medical Directors

Recruitment is currently underway to appoint Executive Medical Directors. The recruitment of Executive Medical Directors would improve local decision making and support innovative new models of care in the hospital. There will be two Executive Medical Director positions for HNE Health hospitals – a 0.5 full time position for the Acute Network ofhospitals and a 0.5 full time position for the Primary and Community Network of hospitals. The Executive Medical Directors will strengthen local decision making and help foster uptake of clinical innovations.

New Clinical Support Officers

Recruitment is also underway for 58 ward-based clinical support officers across the HNE Health’s acute hospital network. HNE Health has received 1,215 applications for the 58 positions. Interviews will take place in September and we will deploy these staff to their clinical areas as quickly as we can.

The ward-based clinical support officers will assist local nurses and midwives with administration and paperwork relating to recruitment, rostering, stock and supply orders and reports, to ensure nurses/midwives can spend more time caring for patients. The breakdown of positions includes:

Calvary Mater Newcastle: 6
John Hunter Hospital: 24
Maitland Hospital: 7
Belmont: 3
Manning Hospital: 6
Tamworth Hospital: 8
Armidale Hospital: 4

More Junior Medical Offices (JMOs)

More Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) are being recruited across the HNE Health region. This recruitment drive aims to expand the medical workforce to ensure NSW has a sufficient number of specialists to meet the needs of the community. It will also aims to expand opportunities for specialists to train in rural and regional centres, which research indicates is a significant factor in retaining doctors in those areas. Additional JMOs will be recruited for Armidale, Tamworth and Manning hospitals.

Uniform posters

HNE Health is rolling out new signage in each facility, so that patients and visitors can easily identify the different categories of staff. This is recommendation 60 of the Caring Together: The Health Action Plan for NSW. The full colour uniform posters will be displayed in all hospitals, community health centres and multi purpose services. These posters will be displayed at the entrance to each facility as well as throughout clinical areas such as wards, clinics and admission and waiting areas. Posters are being distributed to each facility in July.

Please note, Mental Health hospitals and Mental Health Units are not required to display the new uniform poster, as mandatory staff uniforms differ between mental health facilities, and this poster is therefore not applicable to mental health.

Nurse/Midwife in Charge Signs

To help patients more easily know who is caring for them, and who family and friends can contact if they are concerned, we are also introducing signage to indentify the nurse/midwife in charge for each each ward or unit. This is recommendation 23 - “Patients and families will better recognise the Nurse/Midwife in Charge through a prominently displayed ward photo of the relevant NiC/MiC.”

Staff ID badges

HNE Health is in the process of developing new photographic ID badges for all staff and volunteers in line with the recommendation adopted in the Caring Together: The Health Action Plan for NSW - Recommendation 62. To date more than 7,000 new name badges with photo ID have been produced for staff and sessions will continue across the area for staff who are rest to receive their new ID.

This recommendation states that all staff should wear a name badge that clearly identifies their name and role and that the badge be displayed at chest height, not on lanyards. These new staff photographic ID badges will replace all existing staff ID and name badges. The new badges will look similar to the current staff ID, but will be landscape size (rather than portrait) and will be worn at chest height. There will be a magnetic strip or a pin on the back of the badge, depending on personal preference. The rollout to all HNE Health sites will be a staged approach.
