History of the Hunter New England Bone Bank

The Royal Newcastle Hospital Bone Bank was established some years ago, in association with the Newcastle Blood Bank, to meet the increasing needs of the Orthopaedic Department of the hospital.

With the transfer of the Newcastle Blood Bank to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, and in view of the strict requirements for tissue bank licensing under the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), it became necessary to review the functioning of the Bone Bank.  The Royal Newcastle Hospital Executive established a Review Working Group and the Newcastle Bone Bank was then recognised as the Royal Newcastle Hospital Bone Bank.

In April 2000, the Royal Newcastle Hospital Bone Bank became known as the Hunter Health Bone Bank in preparation for the proposed move to the John Hunter Hospital Campus in 2006.

With the move to the Royal Newcastle Centre on the John Hunter Hospital campus in 2006, the Bone Bank changed its name to the Hunter New England Bone Bank in recognition of the expansion of the Area Health Service.
