The Hunter New England Bone Bank is a ‘not-for-profit’ unit of the Hunter New England Area Health Service.
Its primary role is to collect, screen, store and distribute donated femoral head bone for transplantation. The Hunter New England Bone Bank currently collects bone from consenting patients from 4 public and 7 private hospitals within the Hunter New England Area Health Service and beyond.
Patients undergoing hip replacement surgery may donate the ball part of the joint called the femoral head, which otherwise would go to waste.
Surgical procedures that often require bone include spinal, hip and knee operations. Bone graft procedures are very common, second only in number to blood transfusions. Donated bone is often more effective than artificial alternatives. Bone grafts can shorten the recipient’s recovery time for many orthopaedic procedures. Donated bone can be used to fill cavities after the removal of a bone tumour or artificial joint and to reinforce bone that is weakened.
When a surgeon requests bone, a Recipient Consent is obtained as a requirement of supply by the Hunter New England Bone Bank. Minimal matching of recipients to donor bone is required and rejection medication is not used with bone grafting.
As a service for patients and surgeons, the Hunter New England Bone Bank is able to access, store and supply musculoskeletal tissue from Tissue Banks all over
Storage of skull flaps from patients who have required a craniectomy is another service offered by the Hunter New England Bone Bank.
