Speech Pathology
Who we are
Speech Pathology Services provide assessment and treatment to people who are unable to communicate effectively and/or have feeding or swallowing difficulties. These include difficulties in the following areas:
- Language - understanding or using spoken and or written words
- Speech - use of speech sounds resulting in reduced intelligibility
- Voice - including disorders of vocal cord function and use
- Stuttering
- Swallowing
- Hearing Loss - including children who are hearing impaired and who are finding it difficult learning speech and language, or adults who become hearing impaired and are finding it difficult to adjust.
Who we see
CHILDREN who:
- have a difficulty understanding what is said
- have difficulty talking (using words and sentences)
- are not using correct sounds
- are stuttering
- have voice disorders
- have swallowing difficulties (eating and drinking)
These difficulties may be due to:
- developmental delays
- autism spectrum disorder
- learning disorder
- ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
- cleft palate
- dyspraxia - motor planning /coordination
- hearing loss
ADULTS who have difficulty with:
- comprehension of language
- expression of language
- articulation of sounds
- voice
- stuttering
- swallowing/feeding
These difficulties may be due to:
- Stroke
- Head and Neck surgery
- Tracheostomy
- Brain Injury
- Dementia
- Progressive neurological disorders such as Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease
What we do
We provide the following types of services in the home, community health centres and your local community setting:
- assessment
- group therapy
- consultation with teachers
- home programs
- intensive therapy
- consultation and liaison with other government and non government agencies
- Student Unit - therapy provided by Speech pathology students supervised by a senior therapist.
- education to family and carers
- inservice and workshops to community groups and services
