Our Volunteers

The John Hunter Hospital Volunteer Service was commissioned in 1991, two months after the opening of the John Hunter Hospital. Our volunteers, originally known as the Kookaburra Carers, were renamed the “John Hunter Site Carers” after merging with the Royal Newcastle Hospital Pink Ladies in 2007.

The John Hunter Site Carers provide support to our patients and visitors with a focus on patient comfort and care. Our volunteers are involved in fundraising activities across the facility, supporting the purchase of medical equipment, maintenance and service provision for patient accommodation, and other items to enhance the care of our patients. You can support our fundraising efforts by shopping at KC’s Gift Shoppe, located on Level 2.

In addition to fundraising, our Site Carers provide assistance with wayfinding throughout the hospital, preparation of patient gowns for day surgery, and assistance with laundry for patients that live outside the Newcastle region.
