About Us

The Rheumatology Department offers a comprehensive clinical service for patients with musculoskeletal diseases, including:

  • ​Inflammatory joint and systemic diseases
  • Mechanical and degenerative disorders
  • Metabolic bone diseases.

​There are dedicated clinics available for osteoporosis and osteoporosis re-fracture prevention. The rheumatology clinic treats patients with conditions inclusive of:

  • ​Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Systemic vasculitis
  • Scleroderma
  • Inflammatory myositis
  • Gout
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis, and 
  • Paget’s disease.

​Clinics are held daily in the John Hunter Hospital Outpatient Service. Weekly clinics are held at Belmont Hospital, and a monthly clinic at Awabakal in Hamilton.

A Paediatric Rheumatology clinic is held monthly at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital and a Rheumatology Young Adult (adolescent / transitional care) clinic in the John Hunter Hospital Outpatient Service monthly.

Inpatient services are located in ward F2 at John Hunter Hospital. Admissions are either elective through bookings made with a specialist, or urgent via the Emergency Department. A 24 hour consultative service is provided in person at John Hunter Hospital and by phone to other facilities.

Outpatient appointments are made on referral by a general practitioner and are triaged according to clinical urgency. Waiting lists are pooled and appointments are allocated to the next available consultant. 

Appointments to Paediatric Rheumatology and young adult clinic are made by tertiary referral only, via an Adult Rheumatologist or a General Paediatrician.
