Intensive Care Services

About Us

John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Services incorporates two intensive units – General and Cardiac Intensive Care (GICU), and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) – to provide care for cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and trauma patients.

The Intensive Care Service provides medical advice and nursing support to the Hunter Retrieval Service, and is closely associated with other intensive care units within HNELHD.

Our 4 bed PICU admits hundreds of children a year, the majority of which are emergency admissions.

The two units work together to provide tertiary intensive care services to patients throughout the Hunter New England and Mid-North Coast Local Health Districts.
