About Us

​The Gastroenterology Department at John Hunter Hospital has a dedicated Gastroenterology Ward, Outpatient Clinic and busy Endoscopy Unit. 

The department provides specialised, multi-disciplinary care to adults with a range of gastro-intestinal and liver disease problems, offering both inpatient and outpatient clinical services. 

The department is involved in clinical and laboratory research through the John Hunter Hospital, Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle. There are 9 Staff Specialists in the department, one Visiting Medical Officer, and two Advanced Trainees.

The Gastroenterology Department provides a comprehensive service including assessment and management of:

  • ​Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Coeliac disease
  • Gut and intestinal motility disorders
  • Oesophageal disorders
  • Acute and chronic liver disease
  • Chronic viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C)
  • Pancreatic disorders
  • Other complex GI and nutritional problems.
