John Hunter Hospital is a major teaching hospital and is the Primary Tertiary Referral Centre for Trauma in northern NSW, covering all surgical specialties including Cardiothoracic. It includes John Hunter Children’s Hospital, one of the three tertiary Paediatric hospitals in the state. The busy Intensive Care Unit provides Adult Intensive Care Services and supports a Medical Retrieval Service. There is a separate Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The 27 bed John Hunter Hospital ICU admits over 2000 critically unwell patients each year.
