Watch out for creatures that bite or sting

NOVEMBER 2017

Summer is a great time to get outdoors and do activities like going on walks and swimming at the beach. It is however a time when we see an increase in bites and stings. Here are some need to know things about bites and stings.

Snake and Funnel Web spider bites:

  • Call Triple Zero (000)
  • Place a broad, firm bandage around the limb to cover the bite immediately. If the bite is not on a limb, apply firm local pressure.
  • Keep the person as still as possible. If the bite is on an arm or leg, use a splint to immobilise the limb.

Blue bottle stings:

  • Immersion in hot water (45°C) for 20 minutes for pain relief.
  • A hot shower can also ease the sting.
