Tertiary Education

  • Postgraduate Training- A broad range of registrars work within Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital with accredited Registrar posts in Surgery, Medicine, Anaesthetics, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics, Rehabilitation, Pathology, Paediatrics and Emergency Medicine. Some of these positions are seconded from other hospitals (such as Anaesthetic Registrars are rotated to Tamworth and come from the Westmead Hospital training programme) and some are staffed within the hospital. The Rural Training Unit provides postgraduate training in general practice and offers a wide opportunity for training and education. Tamworth is the home of the Emergency Life Support (ELS) course and all interns and RMO1s employed by Tamworth Hospital are encouraged and supported to participate in this course.
  • University Department of Rural Health- Hunter New England Health has a close working relationship with the University Department of Rural Health – Northern New South Wales (UDRH), which is a government funded initiative of the University of Newcastle and is located at the Tamworth Education Centre. Through its clinical activities, education and training of health and medical professionals and research, the UDRH is committed to improving the access of rural and remote communities across Northern NSW to health practitioners and enhancing innovative health service development, especially in public health. The Tamworth Education Centre is located on Johnson Street and includes laboratory, tutorial and study facilities that allow HNEAHS employees and UDRH students and academics to undertake their education, training and research in a facility on par with urban tertiary institutions.
  • University Of New England- The University of New England has approximately 16,000 external students as well as internal students, and is conscious of supporting and serving these students. Each facility is unique to its region and their needs and Tamworth Centre has staff on site to assist with enquiries relating to degree patterns and all other queries relating to studying at UNE. As well as degree information and advice on all aspects of study at UNE, UNE's Tamworth Centre has three computer labs. There are tutorial rooms and quiet study areas for students wishing to have meetings or do some reading and research. Facilities are also available for hire. The Tamworth Centre also has Video Conferencing facilities available.
  • TAFE- Tamworth TAFE is the largest of New England Institute's eleven campuses and specialises in trade training.  They are the largest provider of vocational training and education in the north and north-west regions of New South Wales. Tamworth has special purpose facilities in trades, arts, tourism and hospitality, nursing, welfare, computing, hairdressing and beauty, engineering, transport, veterinary nursing, animal care, children's services, business and administration services, horticulture and aero skills. Courses from Statement of Attainment to Advanced Diploma level are available.
  • College of Counselling Studies- The College offers distance education opportunities to residents based in Tamworth and the New England region of NSW. The college has had over 500 students, who undertake a number of counselling modules that enable graduates to work with a range of clients. Many graduates are now employed in local welfare services or counselling centres Australia wide.
  • Tamworth Community College- Tamworth Community College is a community based, Registered Training Organisation that delivers accredited training and leisure courses. TCC aims to provide customised training and courses relevant to specific industries and community groups in their local areas. Courses include industry qualifications, training and assessment, first aid, hospitality, business, computing, compliance and general interest courses.
  • Tamworth Regional University of the Third Age- Tamworth U3A offers friendly and relaxed courses for local seniors that enables them to share knowledge and interests. Available courses change each term but include things like tennis, book and film, painting, Windows 10 and ipad forums, dancing and cards. Courses are mostly free and provide a great opportunity for senior citizens to socialise and learn new skills.
